I worked in the chemical industry and it works the same way. Following the law is floor and does not make your chemical plant safe. Safety requires understanding the risks and addressing them with training, procedures, and maintenance. And the effort better start with the person in the corner office.

I grew up, in the 60s, in a small midwestern town on I80. Even worked a summer pumping fuel at the “Morris I80 Truck Stop”. I’ve driven multiple cross country trips in one of my cheap “roller skates” and I used to feel secure if I got caught accidentally within a “convoy”. The big rig drivers were almost all mature admirable American Men I would trust with my life! ( a jerk or two but I will not digress).
That is not broadly true of the profession any more. Sorry to the good guys still out there but corruption and degradation, from the top down to the Drivers has killed public trust. Good Guys! Police yourselves like you used to. With call ins and with bare knuckles if necessary! Even Big Union Power - though sometimes abused - was better than This!
Since around 2000 I’d rather take an exit and wait than try to maneuver my little car on a road clogged with speeding, overtaking, tailgating and passing big rigs.
You drive west on 80, day after grueling night, you don't remember this tunnel. I don't remember it. And the black ice in Utah 25 yrs ago? Well I remember that. 3 Sisters shutdown in high winds. You would not believe the things I saw. One day near Rockford IL I looked up and saw clouds! I could not believe it! A song began playing in my head, The Simpson's! That cartoonist, an artist, actually drew the clouds in IL! Which raises a question. Is life/trucking cartoonish? I'd say horribly so.
